What is an FLT licence?

An FLT licence is just an abbreviation of a Forklift Licence… FLT=Fork Lift Truck. You need a licence/certification for high risk work if you want to operate a forklift truck. If you are driving on public roads, you must also hold a valid UK driving licence and the vehicle must comply with the relevant road traffic regulations. In job advertisements for forklift drivers you will even find statements such as “forklift licence required”, “accredited licence required” or “forklift driver with forklift licence wanted”.

The course lasts 3 to 5 days and will train you to be a competent forklift driver.

What is an FLT driver’s licence?

This certificate contains your name, the date of your training and test, and the person who trained and tested you. If you are currently employed and need a forklift licence, your employer is responsible for providing you with the appropriate training. If your operate without one, and there is an accident or incident then your company could face large fines.

The training will include such things as testing forklifts, loading materials, lifting loads, navigating confined spaces and working on inclines.

How much does a forklift licence cost in the UK?

How long is the FLT driving licence valid?

This is a question we’re often asked and anything longer than 3 years without training could be considered negligent, so it is always best to conduct refresher training at regular intervals. However, in the event of an accident, you as a company could be held liable if the forklift driver has not received regular refresher training. With this in mind, many questions arise in relation to certification and whether it needs to be renewed – just like a driving licence. Remember that while there is no operator licence, this is not a licence to neglect standards.
